Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, Mike Okumagba, has described President Muhammadu Buhari as God sent.

Okumagba told newsmen yesterday that the Urhobos in particular and Delta State had a bright economic and political future under the Buhari administration, urging the people to support the polices of the government.

He said: “We will come out of the present economic recession stronger. Nigeria would have been worst off if not for the emergence President Buhari.

“You would agree with me that the word ‘Buhari’ is synonymous with discipline and accountability.

“We should be patient a little bit and in no distant time, we shall enjoy the benefits of the recession”.

On why he decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to APC, Okumagba said “I just want to key into President Buhari’s philosophy of change which has been paying off.

“Joining the progressives will benefit me and the Urhobos of Warri politically.”

“With the likes of the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who is maternally from Warri Urhobo, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Chief Great Ogboru and Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor it will be wise for the Urhobos to support President Buhari and APC in 2019″, he added.

While urging the Urhobos of Warri to always be proud of Chief Oyegun as one of their own, he said “there is no division in APC.

“We are waxing stronger hence they are peddling the unfounded rumor of disunity in APC.”

Contrary to the popular believe that politicians are corrupt, a member of the Jama’atul Izalatulk Bid’a wa Iqamatus-Sunnah (JIBWIS), Dr Bashir Isyaku has said that religious leaders are more corrupt than political players.

Bahir made this known at a workshop organized for religious leaders by the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Research and Training, on Tuesday.

He said the flamboyant lifestyle of religious leaders was evidence of their corrupt practices

“Ask any Imam or Pastor how much he earns per annum to justify his lifestyle. They won’t mention any job or vocation, yet they are the ones living such expensive life; some are undertaking expensive trips with their families abroad. They are just living on the religion,” he said.

He added that religious leaders, who were supposed to direct people on how to worship God had deviated and were promoting and celebrating corruption.

He, therefore, stated that instead of discussing the role of religious leaders in fighting corruption which was the theme of the workshop, the leaders should first be sanitized to be free of corruption before they could be used to fight it.

Speaking earlier, the Director of the Centre Professor Haruna Wakili said one of the mandates of the centre was to ensure that governance was done correctly without promoting or condoning corrupt practices.

The United States (U.S.) will assist Nigeria to repatriate its fund stashed abroad by corrupt public office holders and politicians, its Special Representative to Muslim communities Shaarik Zafar said yesterday.

Zafar, who spoke in an interactive session with reporters in Kano, explained that the U.S. was committed to fast-tracking the process of bringing back the stolen money.

According to him, “before the stolen money could be brought back to Nigeria, certain legal procedures needed to be followed and that is what the U.S. is facilitating.’’

Zafar was optimistic that the fight against corruption in Nigeria would succeed.

He was in the city for an inaugural workshop on anti-corruption tool for religious leaders.

The workshop was organised by Zafar’s Office under the U.S. Department of State.

He said if corruption could be effectively tackled, the country would witness socio-economic growth.

“I am optimistic that if corruption can be tackled, the trend is positive for Nigeria based on the commitment,’’ Zafar said.

According to him, the U.S. was committed toward assisting Nigeria in the fight against corruption.

He added: “Nigeria’s success is America’s success; hence our decision to work with government, civil society organisations and religious groups on areas to prevent corruption.”

The U.S. envoy said the workshop would address how religious communities could work together to combat corruption, promote accountability and encourage transparency.

“I have a global mandate. So, I will encourage a continued focus by religious leaders on the critical challenge of combating corruption. This is not only because of their moral voice. Critically, religious leaders speak a common language with their communities.

“They also have incomparable access, unique networks and level of respect that can help in this common battle against corruption and to promote accountability,”  Zafar stated.

President Muhammadu Buhari will tinker with his cabinet in the coming weeks, following the blistering criticisms he received concerning the composition of his team from his wife, Aisha Buhari. Aso Villa sources who spoke to Pulse over the weekend disclosed that the President was stung by the interview granted the BBC by his wife, even though he’s maintained a stoic, unruffled demeanor in public. In an interview granted the BBC, Ms. Buhari had hinted that a cabal has since seized the Buhari Presidency even though the mafia has zero knowledge of the values underpinning the APC–the platform from where her husband emerged President. “The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years,” lamented Ms. Buhari. She also threatened to boycott her husband’s campaign should he decide to run again in 2019. “I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again,” said Ms. Buhari. Buhari was dismissive of his wife’s comments while stood next to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany. “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room,” Buhari said in a press conference. The President doubled down on his comments some 24 hours later. “I’m sure you have a house, you know where your kitchen, living room and other rooms are and I’m sure your wife looks after these rooms even if she is working. She is to look after me,” he told his interviewer, with characteristic smugness. Villa sources have however told Pulse that even though the President has been mulling the rejigging of his cabinet, his wife’s comments have made that course of action even more of an imperative. “He was hurt by his wife’s comments”, said one Villa source who craved anonymity for this story. “I can tell you that a cabinet reshuffle is imminent. Some of the Ministers have no place in this administration and the President has known that for a while”. One highly placed APC official who works in the Presidency said the party is glad that Ms. Buhari’s comments will have the desired effect. “Even though she shouldn’t have spoken and most of what she said has been taken out of context by the public, I’m glad she did finally speak and we are hearing that some persons in the kitchen cabinet will be asked to take their exits. The mafia will also have its back broken. He’s long known what to do, but now that his wife has reiterated the concerns publicly, Buhari has been left with little choice”. Last month, Buhari denied a cabal had taken over his government. In June, Senate President Bukola Saraki had alleged that there was a “government within the government” of President Muhammadu Buhari. In his riposte through a statement, Buhari had shot back: “This claim by Senator Saraki would have been more worth the while, if it had been backed with more information. If he had proceeded to identify those who constitute the ‘government within the government,’ it would have taken the issue beyond the realm of fiction and mere conjecture. “But as it stands, the allegation is not even worth the paper on which it was written, as anybody can wake from a troubled sleep, and say anything. “To claim that I am anybody’s stooge is not only ridiculous, but also preposterous”, Buhari had said. The President’s spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina, were yet to respond to comments about an imminent shake-up in the federal cabinet at the time of filing this -PULSE.NG

Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje has dragged President Muhammadu Buhari to court, accusing him of violating rights of judges whose houses were raided by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS.

In an N50billion suit he entered before the Federal High Court in Abuja, the Lagos based lawyer, cited the DSS and its Director-General, Mr. Lawal Daura, as defendants.

Ngwuta, Okoroand Ademola Other defendants in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/809/16, were the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the National Judicial Council, NJC. The plaintiff contended that the arrest and detention of the judges without recourse to the NJC, was not only unconstitutional, but also aimed at ridiculing the judiciary arm of government.

According to him, the action of the DSS was in gross violation of rights of the judges as enshrined in sections 33, 34, 35, 36, and 41 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. Consequently, Ogungbeje who Instituted the action on behalf of five out of the seven judges whose homes were “invaded” between October 8 and 9, sought ten separate reliefs from the court, including award of N50billion as general and exemplary damages against the defendants, as well as another N2million as cost of the suit.

Besides, the plaintiff prayed the court for an order compelling the DSS to return to the judges, money that were seized from their homes. As well as to make an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from arresting, inviting, intimidating, or harassing any of the judges pertaining to the case.

A former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has arrived Nigeria in an apparent move to submit himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC
Mr. Obanikoro has been having a running battle with the anti-graft agency on allegations bordering on financial crimes.
He left for the United States shortly after his party lost the 2015 elections and he ceased being a minister.
The EFCC accused him of using his children to take out government contracts that were never executed.
Mr. Obanikoro, on a separate charge, was also implicated in the Ekiti elections scandal. It is not immediately clear if he was prepared to answer questions about that, too.
He had initially vowed not to return to the country alleging persecution by the government as a means to discredit him.
It is not immediately clear when he planned to submit himself to the EFCC, but Demola Olarewaju, an associate of the politician confirmed his arrival.
Mr. Olarewaju said Mr. Obanikoro had moved to Abuja from Lagos and could visit the EFCC headquarters on Monday.

Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro who was the former Minister of State for, has returned to Nigeria in an apparent move to present himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC after being accused of fraud.

The Deputy Director of Operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Iliyasu Kwarbai on Wednesday said the wife of former President, Mrs Patience Jonathan, would not go scot-free if found guilty of corruption.

Kwarbai, said this when he received a petition entitled: ‘Demand for arrest, prosecution of Patience Jonathan, probe of APC campaign fund and no more sacred cow in the anti-corruption crusade.’ against the former First Lady from a group of protesters, under the aegis of Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre at the agency’s office in Ikoyi Lagos.

Recall that the anti-graft agency had recently confirmed that Mrs Jonathan is being investigated for money laundering,  but no case has been instituted against her in any court yet.

The EFCC is prosecuting Badeh alongside a firm, Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, on 10 counts of money laundering bordering on alleged fraudulent removal of about N3.97bn from the Nigerian Air Force account.

According to a prosecution witness who is a former Director of Finance and Account of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Aliyu Yishau (retd.), against Badeh, had informed the court that while Badeh was the Chief of Air Staff, he routinely helped Badeh to divert the sum of N558.2m by converting it to its dollar equivalent.

He said he personally helped Badeh to buy the N1.1bn property which has now been converted to Federal Government’s use.

He had said, “Sometime in January 2013, when I was taking the normal amount to him (Badeh) in dollars, he directed that we should pay for the house. So, he brought out the balance in dollars and made up the equivalent of N1.1bn.”

According to a punchng reporter who approached one of the workers, he said, “The property was given to us by the government to work. I know that the EFCC seized the property some months ago but it was given to us to work.”

The EFCC lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had told the court that the EFCC searched the property and recovered $1m in cash.

Jacobs said although Badeh had denied ownership of the property, his belongings, including photographs, were found in it during a search by the operatives of the commission.

Our correspondent learnt that the decision to convert Badeh’s property may be connected to the Federal Government’s plan to convert seized properties to government use and save cost.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had disclosed at the opening of a meeting with the members of the National Steering Committee of the Efficiency Unit on June 10, 2016, that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government was planning to convert some of the seized properties to offices in a bid to save money spent on rent.

The federal ministry of education has denied some media reports on the cost of building VIP toilets in riverine areas – The ministry says the toilets cost N6million and not N50million.

Six toilets in upland areas also cost N4million and not N40million, the ministry says The federal ministry of education has denied some media reports which wrongly quoted the cost of building VIP toilets in riverine areas.

Nigeria’s minister of education, Adamu Adamu The deputy director, press in the ministry, Ben Bem Goong, said in a statement distributed to journalists, that the N50m and N40m quoted as costs in a recent report was for three projects depending on location which included
VIP toilets and bathrooms in hostels and classroom areas, provision of modern kitchen and renovation of dining halls and borehole and reticulation of water.

It is not a repetition of the same project in the 2014 and 2015 budgets, rather the same project is being replicated in different schools, part of the statement read.

Goong stated that it was wrong to pick one item and give it the cost of three projects. He also said the project is ongoing across 104 unity schools, adding that government would continue to roll it over until all the schools benefit.

According to him, a VIP toilet means pit toilet with improved ventilation, incorporating features to enhance sanitation and health, and not luxury toilets.
Meanwhile, the federal government of Nigeria is set to realise N20 billion from the sale of two presidential jets.  Sources quoted in the report says the estimate is based on the current market value of the jets – Falcon 7X and Hawker 4000. Aviation experts also corroborated the valuation of the aircraft.

Popular Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade has debunked allegation that she was a tax defaulter.
Following her ongoing #DontPushMe campaign on Twitter which she started over poor power supply in Lagos state, reports emerged that the actress does not pay tax and as such, had no right to call out the government on tax matters.

Recall that on her social media war (#DontPushMe campaign) with the Nigerian government, Omotola is known for addressing serious societal issues.

She had recently lashed out at the Lagos State Government, LASG, asking if they would refund all she had spent on buying herself security, fuel and maintaining her road after having paid her tax.

She had also described the state as insensitive.

Meanwhile, as reported by E24-7 Magazine on Monday, Omotola, ‘had never filed her personal income tax return papers.’

The allegations against the diva said “It is unfortunate she has become so vocal, criticizing the government but ignorant of her obligation as a citizen to pay tax.

“She is not tax compliant. She failed to know that it is from the tax that she and others pay that government will provide all the amenities and infrastructures she mentioned.

“She needs a lot of education,” the report had claimed.

However, reacting to this, the award winning actress in a chat with Pulse TV, said the claim that she was a tax defaulter was false.

She said, “That is not correct at all, we will send out a press release very soon.

“We are working with the government to find out who released that article,” the actress noted.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, says the movie industry could be a huge source of revenue if it was well funded, urging the Federal Government to continue to support the industry.
The ‘Secret Room’ actor in a recent chat with newsmen in Lagos described Nollywood as an industry with lots of potentials.

According to him, “The industry is capable of generating millions of naira in revenue if well-funded.

“The industry has lots of prospects and potential that can be used to boost revenue.

“The opportunities in the industry can fetch government huge revenues,” Kosoko noted, recalling the statement made by Carlos Lopez, the executive secretary of the UN’s Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), in January 2016, that ‘Nollywood will overtake India’s Bollywood in earnings and expand to become more African and less Nigerian.”

The general manager of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Garba Deen, says increase in petroleum pump price is happening globally and not just in Nigeria. According to him, top oil producing country, United Arab Emirates, has removed its transportation fuel subsidy and plans to deregulate its oil sector with effect from August 1st.

He also said Saudi Arabia is planning to increase its petrol pump price. Deen said this while speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday May 16th. ‎

"For instance, the United Arab Emirates, the third-biggest oil producer in OPEC, has become the first country in the oil-rich Persian Gulf to remove transport fuel subsidies. In addition, the country has announced that with effect from August 1, 2016, fuel prices will be deregulated. Also, in response to fiscal pressure caused by the fall in crude oil prices, OPEC’s top oil producer Saudi Arabia has announced a plan to raise fuel prices. You can now see that this is indeed a global problem. The truth is that the NNPC does not have the resources for, nor is it designed to meet this increase in supply. The result is the crippling fuel situation across the country. Pushed to supply 90 per cent of the products required for domestic consumption, the NNPC has continued to utilise crude oil volumes outside the 445,000 barrels per day allocated to it, thereby creating major funding and remittance gaps into the Federation Account. As I said earlier, there is no provision for subsidy in the 2016 budget. The erstwhile petrol price of N86.50 gives an estimated subsidy claim of N13.7 per litre, which translates to N16.4 billion monthly. There is neither funding nor appropriation to cover this.” ‎he said

The Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Honourable Umar Yakubu Barde, has said some concerned members of the House “have started talking on how to enact laws that will ensure that looters are either hang or their hands amputated.”

According Daily Independent, Barde is a representative of Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State and he is a believer in the fact that people should be punished for offences committed and that such punishments must be commensurate with the offences.

The lawmaker, who dropped the bombshell that anyone who steals from the treasury in billions should be hanged, said: “We are living in a very funny country where people who steal N1,000 are put in jail for years, while some people steal billions and use the loot to escape justice. That is not good enough. If you ask me personally, I will tell you that we have started discussion; I’ll let the cat out of the bag.”

Barde, who urged Nigerians to take bold stand on the issue of corruption, said: “If you ask me, I will tell you that if someone steals from N1 million to N100 million, he or she should have his hand cut off.  There is nothing wrong with that; so that when we see you on the street, we will know that you stole, which was why your hand was cut off and those who steal in billions should be hanged.”

“I and some members in the National Assembly are of the belief that Nigeria should have special court for corruption cases; specially-dedicated courts, because if you look at the quantum of corruption in the country today, you will pity Nigerians.
“So, why don’t we have dedicated courts to try all these corruption cases so that justice could be dispensed of quickly?,” he queried.

The federal government yesterday reduced the pump price of petrol from N87 to N86.50k per litre with effect from January 1st.

In a statement signed by the‎ executive secretary of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) Farouk Ahmed in Abuja, FG said that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) retail stations will sell at N86 per litre, while retail outlets owned by oil marketers will sell at N86.50k per litre. ‎

The new price follows the approval of the minister of state for petroleum resources Dr. Ibe Kachikwu. The statement adds that the new price will remain till March 31, 2016.

"This is not static; there will be a quarterly review of the pricing template. However, if there is any pricing shift, the minister of state for petroleum resources may call for a review upwards or downward depending on the market condition but for at least the first quarter of 2016 the price will be N86.50/litre while for NNPC it is N86/litre," he said.
